23rd Annual MiASLA/Contractors Golf Classic - July 28th

The golf committee is actively planning of 23nd golf outing scheduled for Wednesday July 28th at Mystic Creek Golf Club.  We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support of this important and fun event!  With involvement from all who attend, we have continued to award student scholarships each year to Landscape Architecture and Horticultural programs in Michigan.  Participation in this outing allows us to continue to offer this benefit to students as well as provide a great day of fun, golf and networking with many professionals within the industry.  Thank you for making this all possible.

While the golfing is enjoyable and catching up with old friends is fun, the highlight of the day concludes with the special recognition of a Landscape Architect, Landscape Contractor and Landscape Supplier.  These individuals / corporations are selected for their significant contributions to Michigan’s Landscape industry.  The awards celebrated last year included Mr. John Grissim from Grissim, Metz and Andriese for Landscape Architect of the year;   Mr. Bill Canon from WH Canon for the Landscape Contractor of the year and Mr.  Scott Palmer from Oaks Concrete Products for Landscape Supplier of the year.

Congratulations to the 2009 President's Award Winners!

This awards program has become an annual tradition for the Chapter that allows for recognition of members that have been diligent and made significant achievements within the profession or to the Chapter over the last year.  We are proud to announce this year’s winners:

Distinguished Member Award: Keith Cheli, ASLA

Our recent success in gaining licensure for landscape architects in Michigan has had many heroes, people who have stepped up to the plate to do their part to move things forward.  But there have also been a few key people, the constant forces that operated in the background throughout the process that were critical to our success.  Keith Cheli is foremost among those anchors.

When the chapter decided to undertake the effort to achieve licensure for landscape architects in 2004, one of its first actions was to create a Government Affairs Committee and appoint a national representative.   Keith accepted that appointment.  His charge was to coordinate with the National ASLA licensure effort and with other chapters who were also seeking licensure.  Then he was to apply that knowledge to Michigan.  Keith was ideally suited for this task having served on the Chapter Executive Committee including as the chapter’s president in 1999.

In 2006, Keith took over the chair of the Government Affairs Committee and was instrumental in establishing our annual Lobby Day.  He represented the Chapter at numerous National Licensure Summits and was a key player in making Michigan the host the 2007 national licensure summit in Grand Rapids.  He also wrote numerous grants to National ASLA that helped secure a substantial amount of funds that furthered the licensure effort.

All the while, Keith was the person who was in constant contact with our lobbyists, lawmakers, executive committee and members of the government Affairs Committee.  When things needed to happen he made sure they got done.

So it is with deep gratitude that the Chapter presented Keith Cheli, with the 2009 Presidents Award in recognition of his service to the chapter and his instrumental role in getting licensure for landscape architects in Michigan.

Outstanding Firm of the Year: Professional Engineering Associates, Inc.

PEA has been a multi-disciplinary consulting firm for over six decades, but it was not until recent years that they chose to develop landscape architecture as a prominent discipline within the company. The success of PEA as a landscape architecture firm has demonstrated that a non-traditional landscape architecture firm can be a leader in both design and sustainable stewardship in Michigan.

In 2009, PEA contributed to dozens of projects in Michigan including several prominent projects that will help to strengthen the State’s economy such as;

  • The Motown Movie Picture Studios in Pontiac, Michigan at which Raleigh Studios is expected to employ over 4000 people;
  • The McLaren HealthCare Campus in Clarkston, which is amongst the largest developments underway in Michigan. PEA’s dedication to balancing a high quality design aesthetic with sustainable features and functionality has been recognized by multiple awards in 2009;
  • ITC World Headquarters in Novi;
  • Garden of Healing and Renewal project in Independence Township.  The Garden of Healing and Renewal has contributed significantly to the quality of life for McLaren’s healthcare patients and has broken new ground in therapeutic garden design by creating it to be very welcoming to the entire community, and is also a MiASLA 2009 Design Award winner.

Emerging Professional of the Year: Lauren Williams, ASLA

Lauren Williams has practiced landscape architecture for eight years. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois who began her career working for nationally renowned landscape architect, Peter Lindsay Schaudt in Chicago, with a focus on urban design and residential landscapes.

At PEA she has flourished as a professional. She is dedicated to both high-quality design and sustainability and this isreflected both in her body of work and her community outreach.  Throughout her career, Lauren has contributed to dozens of prominent projects in Michigan including:

  • Waterside Marketplace (86 acre retail development in Chesterfield Township),
  • ITC World Headquarters (56 million dollar corporate campus in Novi),
  • Motown Movie Picture Studios (motion picture studio campus in Pontiac),
  • McLaren Healthcare Village (healthcare campus with a dozen buildings, parkland, and a therapeutic garden in Independence Township),
  • Dearborn Town Center (urban renewal mixed-use project pursuing LEED Gold Certification),

 As a young professional, Lauren has already been acknowledged as a successful designer through the receipt of multiple awards from various professional associations including the Engineering Society of Detroit Design and Construction Awards for both ITC World Headquarters and Waterside Marketplace. The aesthetics and sustainable elements that Lauren incorporated into the projects were credited by the juries as contributing to the award designation. Lauren has also been awarded a Michigan Chapter of ASLA 2009 Design Award for the Garden of Healing and Renewal in Independence Township. She played an important role in its design. The Garden of Healing and Renewal has made a significant contribution to the quality of life for healthcare patients and represents a new approach in therapeutic garden design by welcoming the entire community.

Honor Award: Elizabeth G. Sachs, founder of the Greening of Detroit

The Greening of Detroit was founded in 1989 to improve the quality of life in Detroit by guiding and inspiring the reforestation of Detroit's neighborhoods, boulevards and parks through tree planting projects and educational programs. Over the years The Greening has expanded its outreach to include a broad sector of greening activities. Its mission reflects this growth: “Guide and inspire the growth of a ‘greener’ Detroit through planting and educational programs, environmental leadership, advocacy, and by building community capacity.” Annually, The Greening hosts planting projects, ranging from full park restorations to streetscape renovations and massive street tree plantings to the creation of community and family vegetable gardens.

Today, The Greening of Detroit is a well-established, non-profit resource agency that partners with federal, state and local agencies, corporations and foundations to assist neighborhood groups, churches and schools in their efforts to improve the ecosystem in Detroit.
